Mexico, key market for videogames

The country has the highest per capita videogame consumption in Latin America

A new analysis on Mexico’s videogame consumption was released today. Despite Brazil having the first place as a consumer, Mexico has a highest consumption per capita even though the consumers’ income is lowest than that of other markets like the US and Japan.

During 2012 revenue for developers of videogame systems and titles reached 14,194 million of Mexican Pesos, an amount that is expected to go up next year as has been the trend for the last few years.

The impact this consumption has on popular culture is clear.

It’s not about age; Mexico has videogame enthusiasts following stories and release dates, from the occasional gamer to hardcore ones.

The 60% of sales are registered from October to January 06, and it is worth noting that consumers don’t hold back on their investments when compared to other technological gadgets.

Videogame companies have noticed the trend and have been paying more attention to the Mexican consumer: they now adapt the titles and are starting to release new games at the same time that other markets; in doing so they avoid piracy and provide customers with a safer purchase.

Throughout the country, including the city of Tijuana, a variety of related events and conventions are held were videogame tournaments are one of the main attractions; some fuse the passion for videogames with an affinity to anime, manga, comics and movies.

There are other kinds of events also inspired by videogames like the Zombie Walk; in the case of Tijuana, the group of the undead-themed march also takes part in social causes helping the community.

The time when videogames were simple-themed and aimed at children is far behind. We have witnessed an evolution in stories, imagery and systems.

The option to play against more than one rival also lets people enjoy longer gaming sessions with their friends. Wireless controls, movement sensors and new features videogame systems have announced just goes to show the world that videogames are here to stay.
