César Chávez will be honored with National Monument.

Monument to be established in Keene, California.

WASHINGTON.- President Barack Obama will make an official announcement on October 8th of the National Monument in California, that will be dedicated to the memory of the civil rights activist César E. Chávez informed the White House today in a message.

The monument which will be a project that will take a few years to complete will be established in Nuestra Señora Reina de la Paz or La Paz in Keene, California.

La Paz is better known worldwide as the property linked to the civil rights activist Chávez and the farm workers movement.

This place was chosen because it is where the national headquarters of the United Farm Workers of America is located, as well as this being the place where Chávez worked, is buried and where he lived with his family since 1970 until his death in 1993.

"César Chávez gave a voice to poor and disenfranchised workers everywhere. La Paz was at the center of some of the most significant civil rights moments in our nation's history, and by designating it a national monument, Chávez' legacy will be preserved and shared to inspire generations to come." said President Obama.

From the rural headquarters in the Tehachipi Mountains in Kern County, California.

"Chávez played an important role in achieving basic worker protections for hundreds of thousands farm workers across the country", added the White House.

The National Chavez Center, in consultation with the United Farm Workers of America and members of Cesar Chavez family, offered to donate certain properties in La Paz to the federal government for the purpose of establishing a monument commemorating César E. Chávez and the farm workers movement.

Official announcement of the site where the monument will be, which President Obama will travel to California for, will finally culminate a long process that has been underway for years.

The property which the César E. Chávez National Monument will be located in will also include a visitor's center containing César Chávez office as well as the UFW legal aid offices, the home of César and Helen Chávez, the Chávez Memorial Garden containing Chávez grave site, and other additional buildings at the La Paz campus.

The César E. Chávez National Monument will be managed by the National Parks Service in consultation with the National Chávez Center, and the César Chávez Foundation.
