Protestors clash with riot police in Mexico City

100 Injured, 92 arrested in protests against Mexico's new president

Mexico City.- Around 100 people were injured and approximately 100 others arrested in clashes between police and protesters angry over the investiture of new President Enrique Peña Nieto in Mexico City, officials said.

A total of 92 people, including 11 minors, were taken before prosecutors following the violence on Saturday, Mexico City Mayor Marcelo Ebrard said in a press conference.

Of those arrested, 72 are males and the rest females, Ebrad said.

The violence was the work of groups that planned the episodes of violence in an effort to affect the stability of the capital, the mayor said.

"What does this have to do with what was happening at San Lazaro?" Ebrard asked, referring to Peña Nieto's swearing-in ceremony at the seat of Congress.

"If anyone is insulted, it is Mexico City because of this aggression, and it is not going to go unpunished," the mayor, a member of the leftist Party of the Democratic Revolution, or PRD, said.

City's District Attorney Jesus Rodriguez, meanwhile, attributed to three anarchist groups for the violence and vowed to investigate whether other groups were involved.

In a press conference earlier, Ebrad had detached these acts of peaceful demonstrations that the National Regeneration Movement (Morena) and the PRD held in protest against the investiture of Pena.

He noted that detainees destroyed public and private property in various parts of the city center, including the vicinity of iconic Palacio de Bellas Artes (Palace of Beautiful Arts), and even attacked the police with Molotov cocktails bombs. Mayor Ebrad rejected these "barbaric acts" which included destruction and damage to buildings, vehicles and at least five police cars and looting of shops.

76 people with minor injuries and another 29 were taken to different hospitals in Mexico City. One of the wounded Juan Francisco Kuy Kendal, 67, suffered a head injury and underwent surgery. His condition is stable and is being controlled, the statement said.

Other patients remain hospitalized with various injuries, including bruises and fractures, he said. The images of the Mexican TV channel Milenio showed a young man wounded in the head and lying on the ground. Authorities haven't released any comment about him.

Peña Nieto was inaugurated on Saturday as Mexico's president, returning the Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI), to power after a 12-year hiatus.
