End of the world: The movies

Creative, thoughtful and memorable films to watch, even if you know the final scene

Take shelter (2011) Plagued by a series of apocalyptic visions and dreams, a young husband and father (Shannon) questions whether to shelter his family from a coming storm, or from himself.

Sunshine (2007) In the future, the failure of the Earth's Sun threatens life on the planet, placing it in a solar winter and compelling humanity to reignite it with a massive stellar bomb attached to a spaceship named Icarus I.

4:44 (2011) The original Abel Ferrara film offers a stunningly believable final day among New Yorkers waiting, like the rest of the world, for the final hour of planet Earth. Needless to say that talented actor William Dafoe, is able to carry most of the film with ease.

Miracle Mile (1988) My favorite cult film of the end of the world, written and directed by Steve De Jarnatt. A hidden gem from the 80s, an unusual film since it starts off firmly in one genre, playing as a charming romance, a typical boy-meets-girl story before switching gears at the end of the first act to become a nightmarish apocalyptic thriller. That's why it was more difficult, and more authentic to make Miracle Mile than any other bad movie with a big budget and special effects.

In craftier films it is better to go for funnier, edgier, or extremely depressing angles in the same storyline to make it a good. To keep up with the a good rhythm for ninety minutes with no letup, maintaining the tension, intriguing , and even some laughs throughout the movie about the end of the world… that takes talent, lots of it.

In order to get familiar with the prophecies and in the mood to do some research of your own of the topic of the year, be sure to rent, download or purchase any of this films before December 21st.

Although many of you may not agree with this list, which will not win either an Oscar or a Pulitzer award, for now please sit down, relax and enjoy the show.
