India: 5 young men accused of rape might face the death penalty

Lawyers refuse to defend them

Education Minister, Shashi Tharoor, stepped onto the floor on Wednesday to propose a new law in memory of the young victim.

"Unless her parents object, she should be honored and the law against rape should carry her name," wrote Tharoor on his Twitter account.

The outrage in India has sparked an unprecedented hunger strike, and a homemade bomb was found near the home of one of the accused in this case.

All these developments have led to the cancellation of concerts by rapper Honney Singh, who has been also sued for a song that encourages the rape of a woman.

The complaint was filed by a police officer named Amitahb Thakur, who said "the songs are extremely vulgar, indecent, and play a role in violence against women." "At a time when the country is in mourning, pornographic expressions are unacceptable," said Kalpana Misra.

Today the first hearing against these young men will be held, with evidence in hand and no lawyer to defend so far.

If convicted they might perhaps be subject to the death penalty.
