Mexican President speaks about Elba Esther Gordillo's arrest

Due process mistakes will not be made like before

In a statement via national television, the President of Mexico, Enrique Peña Nieto, spoke about the arrest and investigation that is being carried out against the leader of the National Union of Education Workers, Elba Esther Gordillo.

"Since the beginning of my administration I made a commitment to comply with and enforce the law. That is the main priority that I have as President.

The law obligates all of us to equally comply with it, and no one can be above it. This is the basic principle of the law.

To ensure the implementation of the law, I have ordered for the due process to be followed correctly that will respect the human rights of everyone involved."

Although Peña Nieto did not mention Elba Esther Gordillo by name, he made it clear that they are respecting her rights, and assured everyone that due process mistakes will not be made like before, which would many times allow for certain people to be set free, like what happened in the Florece Cassez case.

Peña Nieto in his message also made it clear of his "commitment to continue to improve the quality of education" in Mexico.
