Union leader Elba Esther Gordillo will remain in prison

Judge dictated the order

Despite the health problems that Elba Esther Gordillo made complaints about, along with the petitions that were made by Union members for her release. All were not enough to persuade a judge in Mexico to let Gordillo out from prison.

Minutes before Gordillo’s hearing, her daughter Monica Arriola, also a current Senator in Mexico was not allowed in the room where Gordillo’s lawyers were at.

Lawyers Arturo German Rangel, Jose Refugio Gonzalez and Felipe Borrego were all waiting for the judge’s decision that by law needed to be dictated by 10:50p.m. Mexico City local time, in order to keep Gordillo in prison and continue the investigations in this case.

Elba Esther Gordillo was detained on February 26, 2013 at the Toluca airport, when she returned in a private flight from San Diego,CA.

After she was formally charge by the Attorney General of Mexico for the diversion of union funds and her participation with organized crime.

It is estimated that from 2008 to 2011 Gordillo took more than 2 billion dollars, which were taken from accounts belonging to members of the Mexican National Union of Education Workers (SNTE).

Gordillo served as the president of this Union since 1989.
