Woman Sentenced to Death for Facebook Photo

Advocating for the rights of Muslim women

A young woman by the name of Amina, native of Tunisia, uploaded a photo onto her Facebook account that has now led to a death sentence. The reason? It's because of this image where she appears bare-chested with writing on her body.

The Republic of Tunisia, located on the shores of the Mediterranean, mainly practices the Muslim religion. So after this photo began to circulate through social networks and receive more than 4,000 "likes". The girl was then arrested and taken to court where a Muslim cleric sentenced her to death, but not before being whipped 100 times in the back for making such a great "Haram" (sin).

The image where the girl has part of her body uncovered, it reads "####yourmorals", which she wrote to try to advocate for the rights of Muslim women, something that now both her family and the Muslim judge consider as an assault against their beliefs. Amina's family supports the judge's decision and of the punishment that has been imposed to the 19 year old. And also consider that the photo is an "insult to the modesty of women" and to Islam.

The only way that the family said that they will be willing to support their daughter, is for her to say that she was mentally manipulated by the times in which we live and was brainwashed.

"We are a Muslim family and we cannot accept these types of practices that have greatly affected not only our image, but also the image of the Tunisian women and our religion, Islam."

Femen, an activist group, has come along in support of Amina and has posted pictures similar to the one that she is being sentenced for. A picture that the group states is not offensive to no one.
