An invitation to visit Baja California

A letter to visitors from the governor

The governor of Baja California, Jose Guadalupe Osuna Millan, a few days ago sent a letter where he highlighted the great wonders of the state, and invited everyone from abroad to come and visit the region.

"Dear Friends and Neighbors

As governor of Baja California, I extend to you my warmest invitation to visit our beautiful region. It stretches from the border with San Diego, California, forming one of the world's most dynamic binational regions, to the quiet beaches of the Pacific Ocean and the Sea of Cortez.

Baja California main destinations – Tijuana, Rosarito Beach, Ensenada, Mexicali, Tecate, San Felipe and San Quintín,- plus the many villages and towns between, offer on of the most diverse ranges of experience and geography available anywhere in the world.

With close to 1,000 miles of coastline, Baja California encompasses beaches, deserts and mountains. Visitors enjoy surfing, biking, off-roading, whale watching, hiking, fishing and so much more. And that's only the beginning.

Baja California is world famous for its cuisine. The Caesar salad was invented in Tijuana. Puerto Nuevo is one of the lobster capitals of the world. Celebrity chef and travel show host such as Anthony Bourdain recently called Baja's Wine County "the new Tuscany", and renowned Chef Rick Bayless said "Baja hast the most exiting cuisine". Here visitors can enjoy our elegant multi-course meal in a fine restaurant or a fish taco or tostada at a quaint sidewalk stand, compliment by regional wines and craft beer, considered among the best in the world.

Baja California has a rich history, plus thriving art and indigenous artisan communities, which produce paintings, fine jewelry and handcrafted furniture. It's a film mecca. "Titanic", "Master and Commander", Robert Redford's upcoming "All is Lost" and many more movies were filmed at Baja Studios located in Rosarito Beach.

For decades, millions of people have visited us (and thousands have stayed on as residents). An easy drive from the United States, Baja California offers a rich vacation experience at amazingly affordable prices – with some of the warmest and friendliest people anywhere as your hosts.

With warmest wishes,

José Guadalupe Millán

Governor of the State of Baja California"

Although there is a lot of fear that is still talked about in regards to the state. There are also some statistics that show otherwise, where the citizens of Baja California are enjoying and living in a time that the danger and violence level has gone down even for tourists.

"We would like to inform you that Baja California is a safe destination for tourists. During 2008 and 2009, security problems were indeed present due to the conflicts that drug dealers had over territory. However, this only affected the people directly involved in illegal activities.

Today we can affirm that Baja California is a safe tourist destination where national residents as well as foreign visitors can enjoy their daily activities, tranquil walks in a safe ambiance, and all that Baja has to offer.

We invite you to visit our region and enjoy our culture and natural beauty. "
