Suspects in murder, smuggling arrested

Border agents in Calexico find 78 pounds of cocaine in dashboard

Authorities arrested a man wanted for murder in Stockton early Wednesday morning as he was attempting to cross the border at San Ysidro, the Customs and Border Protection agency announced.

In a separate incident, authorities seized 78 pounds of cocaine hidden in the dashboard of a vehicle in Calexico.

In San Ysidro, 21-year-old Roberto Elias was trying to cross the border as a pedestrian around 4 a.m. A CPB officer, conducting a routine check of police databases, discovered that the man had an arrest warrant for homicide in Stockton, with bail set at $1 million, according to the agency.

Elias, a U.S. citizen and resident of Stockton, was arrested and booked into the San Diego Central Jail.

CPB also announced Wednesday that its agents had seized the cocaine, valued at $624,000, at the Calexico port of entry.

About 9:30 p.m. Monday, a CBP officer and detector dog were screening vehicles waiting to cross, when the canine alerted to a 2003 Honda Accord, the agency announced.

Officers sent the driver, a 53-year-old Mexicali man, to secondary inspection. They discovered and then extracted 30 wrapped packages of cocaine that had been hidden in the car’s dashboard.

The man was arrested for the alleged smuggling attempt.
