"MagicJack" for deported immigrants in Tijuana

"A mother does not expect money, what she is waiting for is a call"

This morning the Comprehensive Family Development of Tijauna (DIF) handed out five "MagicJack" devices to a few local shelters that attend immigrants that had been deported to Tijuana, so that they can communicate with their relatives free of charge.

This is the continuation of the migrant support program, which in just two years; it has managed to assist migrants on more than 12 000 free calls to the United States, Central America and Mexico.

Carolina Garcia Bustamante, President of the Board of DIF Tijuana, said that the devices were purchased with funds from the department Migrant Assistance that had a total of $3,499 pesos ($297.00 USD).

"We are pushing for the third consecutive year the program has had remarkable results," Bustamante, who also pointed out that with a minimal investment, it has all been used to help out many families.

The General Director of DIF Tijuana, Griselda Arellano Duenas, said that the MagicJack devices allow free international calls to the United States, Canada and parts of Central America for a period of one year.

"Our work here at DIF is to support families when a loved one leaves home in search of a better future for his family, a mother does not expect money, what she is waiting for is a call," said Arellano.

Karla Plascencia Lopez, Director of the Municipal Social Development, emphasized the effort made by the City of Tijuana for the care of vulnerable groups that are somewhat a characteristic of border cities.

"While a lot or a little is done, rest assure you are not alone, we work to provide a better life while they are here," said Lopez.

The small organizations that benefited from this third edition of the "Contact your Family" were the YMCA House, Salvation Army (Ejecitio de Salvacion), Mother Assunta Institute, Casa Refugio Elvira and the Coalition for Migrant Support.
