Disney pulls back on "Dia de los Muertos" trademark

Thousands of people were unhappy with the initiative

After it was announced yesterday that the Walt Disney Company was looking to patent the Mexican tradition of "Día de los muertos¨ (Day of the Dead), thousands of people were unhappy with the initiative by the company that a petition was created for this not to happen..

Apparently this petition worked, because Disney decided to pull back on their attempt to trademark this beautiful Mexican tradition. A company spokesman spoke with CNN where he said:

"Disney's trademark filing was intended to protect any potential title for our film and related activities. It has since been determined that the title of the film will change and therefore we are withdrawing our trademark filing."

In November 2003, "Dia de los Muertos" entered in the list of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO.
