U.S. citizen accused of Drug Trafficking released from Mexican Prison

Her arrest was a trap to set her up and extort her

MEXICO. – Authorities from the Mexican state of Sonora confirmed today that a state judge issued a "release order" for U.S. citizen, Yanira Maldonado, who was allowed to leave from prison late last night, official sources said.

Local media reported today in their online versions that Maldonado left the jail, shortly before midnight last night, and outside of the prison was her husband, Gary Maldonado, waiting for her.

Yanira Maldonado, a nationalized Mexican American, was arrested last May 22 at a military checkpoint in the northern state of Sonora for allegedly carrying six kilos of marijuana under the seat of the bus she was traveling in with her husband, whom were traveling from Los Mochis Sinaloa to Sonora, on their way back

to Arizona after attending the funeral of a relative.

Her arrest sparked a lot of outrage from both her family and U.S. authorities, because according to the statements of her father and of her husband, it was a trap to set her up and extort her.

Via Twitter, the Secretary of State for Social Communication, Jorge Morales, reported that Maldonado was released yesterday from the Social Rehabilitation Center (Cereso) for Women located in the city of Nogales, Mexico.
