Armed commando kills two prison guards and freed nine inmates

Prison director is still missing

Mexico.-Two guards were killed in a southwestern Mexican prison during a prison break operation, in which nine prisoners were freed, officials said.

The State Public Safety Department said in a statement yesterday morning that an armed group stormed into the Social Rehabilitation Center (Cereso) of La Union, located in the Costa Grande of Guerrero, and freed nine convicts.

At approximately 5a.m. is when this incident occurred, where they enter the prison with assault rifles and hand guns killing prison guards Emigdio Castro Texta, 35, and Efrain Torres Gomez, 28. Also another custodian and an inmate were injured in this incident.

The Secretariat for Public Safety explained that the inmates who were released are Jorge Luis Ventura, Abelardo Garcia, Jose Antonio Martinez, Felix Campos, Misael Pineda, Jesus Castro, Vicencio Delgado, Erick Rodriguez and Gonzalo Lara. The type of crimes that these fugitives commit was not specified.

Also, Damian Manuel Chavarria, director of the prison, who apparently fled at the time of the assault, is still missing.

Currently, military and police forces are conducting an operation in the area bordering the state of Michoacan to try to capture the fugitives.

Prison breaks and riots occur frequently in Mexico. In September of last year, 131 inmates fled the prison in Piedras Negras, Coahuila Mexico, which became one of the most massive escapes from a Mexican prison.
