First gay marriage ever in Baja is rejected

State law does not allow such unions

Victor Manuel Aguirre Espinoza and Victor Fernando Urias Amparo, a couple who hoped to be the first in the region to marry despite being gay men, got rejected by Administrative Office of the Civil Registry of Mexicali, even after making the payment and providing all of the required documentation for the marriage license.

The couple’s friends, family members, and guest were already waiting for a ceremony to take place, but instead got this news.

Arguing that state law does not allow such unions, court officials rejected the wedding. This announcement was made by the couple's lawyer, Jose Luis Marquez Saavedra, to the media that gathered in the Registry after the court official, Annette Aldrete Gruel, informed everyone that they ceremony would not be taking place.

Neither the court official nor any other person of the Civil Registry has made any comments regarding the matter.

The couple's lawyer made it very clear that the couple would marry in Mexicali "one way or another", and revealed that an injunction will be file against Aldrete.
