This week Microsoft announced the recipients of the 2013 Microsoft Research Faculty Fellowship; among them Monica Tentori originally from Ensenada, BC.

Tentori is currently part of the Center of superior investigation in Computer Science ( Departamento de Ciencias de la Computación del Centro de Investigación y Estudios Superior (CICESE) ). Tentori received her bachelors degree in Computer Science from the Universidad Autonoma de Baja California. She also achieved her Masters and Doctorate in Computer Science with CICESE. From there she received post-doctorate training at UC Irvine.

Through her project Monica shows that through computer science quality of life is improved, especially in the medical attention to the elderly and to autistic children. These computer science benefits observed during an analysis of her research in the interaction between individuals and computers. The project is now on going for over seven years, and even before then previous studies had been made.

As part of her award the Mexican scientist will receive a $50,000 grant from Microsoft to continue her investigations, and will be eligible to renew the grant next year. It will be in mid July when Dr. Tentori will travel to Redmond, Washington to receive her recognition. In this edition of the Microsoft Research Faculty Fellowship Tentori was the only Latin American chosen; the rest of the winners are from USA, Africa, Asia, New Zealand, and Australia.

Among her current projects her research with autistic children is fascinating. Through visual stimulants and the creation of social networks autistic children are being able to integrate themselves into the new digital society.
