USMNT debuts in Gold Cup with big win

USA beats Belize 6-1 and leads Group C

SEATTLE - The United States Men's National Team (USMNT) could not have asked for a better start to this 2013 CONCACAF Gold Cup than the one they had against Belize with the big 6-1 win. With a Chris Wondolowski 'Hat-Trick' as well as goals from Jose Torres, Stuart Holden, and Landon Donovan the USMNT took the three points in the opening game; Gaynair got the Caribbean side on the board.

USMNT got off to a fast start, Wonolowski would open up the scoring in the 12th minute of play. It was Tijuana Xolos midfielder Joe Corona who had headers a cross towards the goal, mother ball was blocked by a defender but left there for the taking. Wonolowski bounced on the rebound and smashed in the first goal of the game.

In the 36th minute Wondolowski once again became present on the scoresheet, this time with a diving header following a good first time cross from Kyle Beckerman.

Belize got what seemed like a ray of hope in the 40th minute, Gaynair was left completely open in the box during a free kick and header in the ball to pull Belize within one goal.

The joy would not last long for the Caribbean side, 42 seconds later Wondolowski for a third time made his pretense felt. After another good cross from the right side of the field came in, Wondolowski anticipated his marker to head in his third goal of the game.

Early in second half the USMNT would get their fourth. It was Joe Corona who sent in a cross from the right side of the field and found Landon Donovan in the far post. Donovan headed down the ball for Stuart Holden to come in and finish the play giving the USA a 4-1 lead.

Mexican-American midfielder Michael Orozco-Fiscal would add another goal in the 71wt minute. Orozco was in the middle of the six-yard box and header in a Landon Donovan free kick.

A few minutes after the fifth goal, center referee gave the USMNT a highly doubtful penalty. Landon Donovan stepped up and sent the goalkeeper the wrong was to make the score 6-1.

Up next for the USMNT is a game against Cuba on Saturday July 13 in Utah.
