Mexico vs Martinique: El Tri must keep improving

The Mexican team will be facing what on paper is the easiest opponent.

DENVER - In the last game of the group stage the Mexican National Team will be facing a team that is not even recognize by FIFA. Martinique is recognized by CONCACAF, but according to FIFA Martinique is just a French property.

In spite of bringing an alternate squad Mexico was expected to be far more superior than any of its group rivals; something that has not happened so far. Mexico has struggled in its first two game, even losing the first to Panama. While they did pick up the win in the second game, but against such a weak Canadian side it was expected that Mexico get a bigger victory, similar to those the U.S. Men's National Team is getting.

Against Martinique, Mexico will have to take advantage of their weaknesses not just to get the win but to bring calm to the Mexico supporter and the Mexican press. Because with another dreadful performance like the first two (even winning), plus the horrible participation of El Tri in the Confederations Cup, plus all of the struggles in World Cup Qualifying the calls for manager Jose Manuel "Chepo" de la Torre to be fired will increase.

The Mexican fans will be hoping for another performance like the Mexico vs Martinique in the 1993 Gold Cup where Mexico won 9-0 with 7 goals from Luis Roberto Alves "Zague".

Martinique comes into this game tied in points with the Mexicans (3 points) but with an inferior goal difference. The Caribbean side shocked the world by picking up a last minute win over Canada. They then lost in similar fashion, with a last minute goal to Panama in the second game. A win against Mexico will assure Martinique a place in the quarterfinals plus give them a chance at first place, a draw with the Mexicans would automatically give the Aztecs the second place of the group, and Martinique could go through to quarterfinals as one of the best third places with four points.

Possible lineups:

México: Jonathan Orozco, Miguel Layún, Joel Huiqui, Juan Carlos Valenzuela, Adrián Aldrete, Alejandro Castro, Efraín Velarde, Luis Montes, Marco Fabián, Rafael Márquez-Lugo, Raúl Jiménez

Martinica: Kévin Olimpia, Sebastien Cretinoir, Gregory, Jacky Berdix, Jean Babin, Daniel Herelle, Oliver Thomert, Mathias Coureur, Kevin Parsemain, Fédéric Piquionne, Steve Gustan
