Over 350 stingrays found dead in Mexico

A whale was also found dead

Over 350 of rays and stingrays were found dead on a beach in Veracruz, Mexico, however, the cause of death is not yet known, said Mexican officials on Monday.

Given the amount of the dead stingrays, local authorities have requested the intervention of the Federal Environmental Prosecutor to determine the causes of death that has occurred on the beach that is located 35 kilometers from the tourist port of Veracruz, in an area known as Chachalacas, in the municipality of Ursulo Galvan.

Fishermen and tourists were the ones who alerted authorities, after discovering these stingrays on the beaches of Chachalacas, which is a large coastal area with dunes that is used for extreme sports.

The local government’s Environment Secretary, Victor Alvarado Martinez, said that the death of these stingrays will be analyzed by marine specialists to see if their health was affected by some external agent.

They will also investigate any possibilities of any malpractices by persons who are engaged in fishing for these mammals during their migration period, in order to catch them and market them.

Also found dead on a beach in Veracruz last Saturday, was a whale that measured more than two meters long. The cause of death is also not known.
