LA Galaxy 2-1 Vancouver Whitecaps: Galaxy defeats a tough opponent at home

This was Vancouver’s first loss in the last seven games.

LOS ANGELES – The Los Angles Galaxy took on the on fire Vancouver Whitecaps.

The Galaxy began the match pressuring and dominating the game. By the tenth minute of the game the LA side already had two clear goal scoring opportunities. In the sixth minute Marcelo Sarvas found the end line after a long throw in, Sarvas crossed in the ball to where Hector Jimenez put in a solid header towards the gaol. Vancouver defender cleared the ball off the line.

Two minutes later Juninho took a shot from outside the box and hit the cross bar, Gyasi Zardes barely missed heading in the rebound.

Even though Galaxy had full control of the match they were surpriced on the counter attack in the 18th minute. A long pass from Lee Young-Pyo out of defense bounced on a Galaxy midfielder and found its way to a wide open Camilo Da Silva Sanvezzo. The MLS leading goal scorer did not waste the opportunity and slotted the ball pass Galaxy goalkeeper Cudicini.

The home side did find an equalizing goal through Jose Villareal in the 28th minute; but the paly was filled with controversy. Juninho took a free kick from the left side, he sent in the cross to the far post to where the ball was flicked back to the center of the box. Zardes jumped to head the ball but was to able to, Jose Villareal then had the simplest job which was to tap the ball in. The assistant referee raised his flag to indicate an offside position on Jose Villareal.

The center referee walked over to talk to his assistant and it was determined that Zardes did not touch the ball when he jumped up, therefore Villareal was not in a offside position, and the goal would count.

In the second half the Galaxy retook control of the match, but they weren’t as dominant as those first ten minutes. Zardes became a real menace at the top pressuring the Vancouver defenders in every play.

It was Zardes himself who would give the Galaxy the lead in the 56th minute. Left back defender Todd Dunivant sent in a long pass for Zardes to chase down. Zardes reached the ball before it went pass the touchline then cut in between two defenders and beat goalkeeper Knighton.

In the final minutes the Vancouver side pressured the Galaxy back into their own field as they searched for the equalizing goal. But they did not find it and the Galaxy were able to hold on to take the three points.

With the win Los Angeles now passes Vancouver in the standings and sits in third place for the moment. Galaxy will now travel to Colorado to where they will face the Rapids on July 27 in another crucial Western Conference showdown.
