Xolo by Xolo review: against Atlas

A player by player review of the Tijuana Xolos on their first game of the season.

TIJUANA – Week one of the new Liga Bancomer MX is now in the books and Tijuana Xolos are already a team to watch thanks to the "Hat-Trick" by new comer Dario Benedetto. Here is a player by player review of the Tijuana team in their match against Atlas.

Adrian Zermeño – The goalkeeper had a good performance. Some say he could have done more in the Vuoso's second goal, but to be fair to him nobody expected that kind of a shot. And he also ha an important one on one save that allowed Xolos to hold on to the lead at that moment. (8/10)

Aldo Polo – Unfortunately for Polo he has not landed in Tijuana on the right foot. All through out the preseason games and this first league game he was shown some weaknesses that the opponents have been able to take advantage of. In this game he lost several one on one battles with Atlas' Jair Barraza, including a playin in which Polo fouled Barraza inside the penalty box causing a penalty kick to be awarded to Atlas. (6/10)

Javier Gandolfi – The captain had a good performance, neither him nor Pablo Aguilar could do much in any of the three goals. They will now have less help since Arce and Pellerano will be pressuring the ball a little higher up the field in the new more attacking formations of Jorge Almiron. (8/10)

Pablo Aguilar – The Paraguayan had a solid game, getting in his tackles at the correct time, never drawing too much attention on himself. He knows how to dribble out of defense and with time Almiron will learn how to use that attacking skill that Aguilar posses. (8/10)

Greg Garza – Garza had a great preseason and continued his good form in this game. He has grown a lot, especially in his dribbles up the field. He sent in two or three quality crosses that could have resulted in goals. He will definitely bring stiff competition to Edgar Castillo. (8/10)

Christian Pellerano – The Argentine was as strong and authoritative as always. Hopefully Jorge Almiron asks Pellerano to start having long distance shots, because few in the Xolos have the capability to shoot the way he does.

Fernando Arce – It was good returned from injury for Arce who didn't seem he was ever injured. Arce ran all over the field, helped out offensively and defensively. (9/10)

Diego Olisna – A player that was near to be shipped out to the second division affiliate Dorados, he is that player that brings calm and slows down the ball when need be in the attack. Game by game he'll become more and more important to this team. (8/10)

Richard Ruiz – The Chiapas native is a wild card for Xolos, he can play various postions and usually does very well in them. He started the game a right winger and ended as a right back. Unfortunately he had the bad clearness with his head that lead to Vuoso's spectacular bicycle kick goal. (7/10)

Emmanuel Cerda – It was a surplice to see Cerda's name in the starting eleven instead of Fidel Martinez. Cerda was used as that center forward next to Benedetto to play as post; he had a good preseason but has struggled as of late with his new functions. (7/10)

Dario Benedetto – Scored three goals, and when someone scores three goals sometimes words are just not needed. (10/10)

Paul Arriola – Since the preseason the youngster who was brought in for the U20 team has been making a claim to stay in the first team. He came in and had an assist and is not scared of taking on defenders. (10/10)

Fidel Martinez – Only played four minutes, naturally could not do much. (7/10)
