Rayados 2-1 Xolos : Another loss for Tijuana

A late mistake from Goalkeeper Saucedo gave the home side the win

MONTERREY, NL – Club Tijuana Xoloitzcuintles suffers their second away loss by a score of 2-1 against Monterrey. Tijuana Xolos tought they had earned a point with a late equalizer from Paul Arriola, but an even later mistake from Saucedo contributed to Monterrey finding a winning goal.

The first half of this match was very evenly fought. Monterrey had better control of the ball, and managed to keep possession, but could not create much danger on Saucedo's goal. Tijuana Xolos had a handful of chances they could not take advantage of but seemed the more likely to score in the first 45 minutes.

It was the home side who had the first opportunity of the game in the 7th minute, in what would be Monterrey's one and only chance during the first half. Humberto "Chupete" Suazo put in a through ball to Dorlan Pabon who was playing in his sixth and final Liga Bancomer MX game with Monterrey. Pabon went one-on-one with Saucedo, but his shot went out wide.

Joe Corona had a pair of dangerous shots on goal and forced Monterrey goalkeeper Jonathan Orozco to make huge diving saves on both of them to keep the game scoreless. In the 20th minute Corona received a pass in midfield, dribbled by one defender and from outside of the box had a shot and Orozco was able to send the ball to a corner kick.

Five minutes later in the 25th minute of play Corona received a cross field pass from Fidel Martinez. Corona had the shot on the quick hop and once again Orozco was there to send the ball to a corner kick.

In the 40th minute Edgar Castillo dribbled into the box and had one of those shot/crosses where he just hit the ball with power hoping a defender or attacker would knock the ball into the net or it would find its own way into the far post.

For the second half the home team pushed Xolos all the way back and really pressured to get that first win of the season. Tijuana ended up paying for not making the small first half dominance count.

In the 50th minute Suazo dribbled all the way to the end line on the right side of the field and sent in a cross to wide open Neri Cardozo who one time shot the ball over the cross right in front of Saucedo.

Before being subbed out a midst a sea of "boos" Dorlan Pabon had the clearest goal scoring chance up to that moment in the 65th minute of the game. Pabon had beat Aguilar in the body-to-body battle and faced off with Saucedo once again, he had a powerful shot that Saucedo was able to safe with his foot.

Monterrey would make all of the pressure pay in the 78th minute. Omar Arellano orchestrated the play that would give the home side the lead. He dribbled down the middle of the field leaving defenders in his way. Arellano opened up the ball to the left side to where Neri Cardozo was completely open, Cardozo went one-on-one with Saucedo and shot the ball into the far post, hitting the upright as it rolled into the net.

The Xoloitzcuintles fought back and late in the game second half substitute and Chula Vista native Paul Arriola scored the equalizing goal in the 87th minute. Arriola hustled down the field and won a divided pass, Cerda one timed the ball pack to Arriola who was still running full speed; Arriola had a low powerful shot that beat Orozco to level the score.

Xolos kept going looking for a winning goal, but this would come for the home side. Cesar "Chelito" Delgado dribbled on a fast counter attack on the right side of the field. Delgado sent in a long cross, Saucedo tried to go and punch the ball away but completely missed the ball leaving the ball available for Suazo to head into a wide open net.

Club Tijuana will now travel to Honduras to take on Club Deportivo Victoria in the second match day of the CONCACAF Champion's League on Tuesday night. They will then come back home to Tijuana to take on Santos in the Estadio Caliente on Friday.
