Tijuana Xolos 3-0 Veracruz: Home dominance crushes Red Sharks

Xoloitzcuintles climbs up the league with big home win.

TIJUANA - Club Tijuana Xoloitzcuintles put in another dominant performance at home and walked away with three important points. Xolos defeated the newly promoted team who had began this season strong with a score of 3-0.

Despite the two goals during the first half; the opening 45 minute were slow and did not produce high quality football from either team. Both squads showed signs of missing their midfield brains. Xolos were without Fernando Arce, while the visiting Veracruz were missing Angel Reyna both are currently with the Mexican National Team.

With Arce not in the midfield, Cristian Pellerano stepped up and controlled the Tijuana midfield. The most dangerous plays of the game came through the Argentine’s feet. Xolos came close to scoring off of Pellerano’s passes; but it was a through ball that he sent to Diego Olsina that created the breakthrough in the game. Olsina reached the end line and put in a cross across the face of goal to where Fidel Martinez just had to tap the ball in to give the Xolos lead in the 34th minute.

Four minutes later Diego Olsina racked up another assist, this time taking a free kick on the right side and sending it to the box to where Pablo César Aguiar header the ball into the net to make the score 2-0. It was an emotional moment for the Paraguayan after the week he has had. He was sent home from his National Team due to what they considered a life threatening medical condition. Tijuana doctors acknowledged the medical issue but cleared him to play.

In the second half the visiting team tried to push up the field in search of anything that could give them hope. But due to Reyna’s absence failed to create any danger on Cirilo Saucedo’s goal. They did manage to leave a lot of open space in their defensive unit, space that Pellerano took advantage to send in a long through ball to Fidel Martinez so the Ecuadorian could score his second goal of the match by chipping the charging goalkeeper. With his two goals today Martinez now has five goals this Apertura season.

Up next for Club Tijuana is a visit to Guadalajara to face the struggling Chivas. Xolos will be looking for their first points on the road.
