PRI of Baja California changes their mind: No to the VAT standardization in the Border

They announce their rejection toward key points in the Tax Reform

The representatives of the Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI) of Baja California, manifested that they will request changes to the Tax Reform before they vote, among the changes they request is the Standardization of the VAT in the border (which would increase it to 16% from 11%, making the same as the rest of the country).

Could it be a case of social pressure? Last week, the federal congressmen of PRI changed coordinator. They removed Maria del Carmen Lopez Segura from her position as coordinator and in her place they instituted Chris Lopez. Many commented that this change came because Lopez Segura made her stance against the tax reform clear, shortly after she was removed from her position, as soon as Chris Lopez took her place, he made his stance public as well as that of his fellow congressmen, in a speech stating that they would be supporting the tax reform, this speech made him a target of innumerable complains and criticism, from opposing party affiliates, the general public as well as fellow party members and followers.

Today, Nancy Sanchez Arredondo, president of PRI in Baja California, confirmed that the party will seek changes to the tax reform. The key points are requesting change on is the Standardization of the VAT in the border, as well as not supporting VAT on Tuition, and finally rejecting the tax on temporary imports in the Manufacturing sector.

With this, PRI joins the posture of it's opposing political parties of PRD and PAN, who's representatives previously made several speeches about the way this tax reform would affect the nation in a negative way. PAN started a national campaign to strengthen it's cause, and PRD took it upon themselves to present a study on how much damage this reform would have on the general population, a study which they presented to the Secretary of Treasury in Mexico, Luis Videgaray.

Most resent studies affirm that if the tax reform is applied as it currently stands, it would cost Mexico 9k million dollars a year. Legislators are expected to make their final decision about the tax reform no later than October 14, which is why the voting, be it pro or against the reform, will be held within the next few days.
