Mexican Senate and Congress will have more women

The President Enrique Peña Nieto signs the official initiative

As part of the 60th anniversary of the feminine vote in Mexico, President Enrique Nieto, signed an initiative this morning in which they will seek that 50% of positions for Senate and congress be fulfilled by women. This document could modify the Federal Code of Institutions and Electoral Procedures (COFIPE) in order to apply this measure, where they also specify that their substitute has to be female as well.

Peña Nieto said: "I will sign this initiative and send it to congress, which if approved, political parties will be obligated to have 50% of their candidates be females, both for congress and senate, I have no doubt that this will be easily approved".

The announcement and signing of the initiative was held at a ceremony celebrated in the courtyard of the National Palace. At the end of his speech, the President of Mexico made a call to state governments to promote similar reforms. Peña Nieto also thanked the women who voted for him, point out that "It is thanks to all the women who gave me their trust that I am allowed to be in this level of responsibility".

The President of Mexico also announced key points where he will be taking action to help women across the country, by increasing their chances to get jobs and keep them, improve conditions for women to get access to justice, social security, and economic welfare, to encourage male participation in housework, promote women rights in families, prevent and eradicate violence against women, promote services and policies which support family and finally evaluate the social programs.
