Lobster Festival 2013: Celebrating the flavors of Puerto Nuevo

The world renowned Lobster dish

The Lobster Festival is held every year, although it is usually celebrated in the Popotla Blvd in Puerto Nuevo, this year they changed it to the Puerto Nuevo Baja Hotel, formerly known as the Grand Baja Hotel. With local businesses from Ensenada, Rosarito and Tijuana, the event was a combination of culture and flavor.

Before we headed for the main dish, we decided to see what else was in store for us at the festival, and despite having Lobster as the main theme for the event, the booths were quite varied, offering the different sides and flavors that Baja California has to offer, one such example was Baja Produce Deli place, which had a selection of delicious cheeses with basil, green olives as well as olive oil.

Also influencing in the Baja California experience, were the Agave Liquor of 2&2, who were kind enough to give us samples of their products "Maduro" and "Añejo", which had a very pleasant detail, unlike tequila which sometimes burns in your mouth rather than your throat, their liqueurs allowed the flavor to be fully appreciated, making what is otherwise a bitter-sweet experience of drinking into something much tastier.

And if that alcohol wasn't enough, there were also winemakers at the festival which let us try their excellent wines, such as "Vinos Sueños", with a selection of Rosé wines and Cabernet Sauvignon, we liked it so much that at the end of the day, we came back for another glass to satisfy the craving.

After making the round and ready to eat, we headed toward the restaurants to partake in the main dish. With 3 of the most representative restaurants of the Puerto Nuevo Lobster in Baja California, Ortegas, La casa de la Langosta and Puerto Nuevo II were serving the main attraction, although we wanted to try all of them, it was physically impossible to eat that much lobster, which is why were were unable to try the Puerto Nuevo II's take on the dish.

The 2 dishes we were able to enjoy were from Ortegas and La Casa de la Langosta, each one had their own special take on the dish, which left us unable to pick favorites.

The dish from Ortegas was the traditional Puerto Nuevo Style lobster, with beans, rice and flour tortillas on the side, but the entree that stood out was their shrimp, wrapped in bacon, stuffed with 3 different kinds of cheeses, spices and minced lobster. I particularly enjoyed the way they prepared the lobster, first they deep fried the lobster tails, then they sauteed them with butter on a griddle, leaving a thin crust of crunchy lobster meat, infused with buttery flavor, personally, I really like this cooking style, because it lets you enjoy the dish without the need to enhance the flavor by adding much else.

The restaurant La Casa del la Langosta opted for a lighter touch, with the side dishes being a lobster chimichanga, which could easily be a main dish or just an appetizer and it would work perfectly as either one by itself. The other side dish was a shrimp and scallop cocktail, which was a perfect palate cleanser in between the sampling, making every bite of their lobster as delicious as the first bite.

After all that effort to consume everything they had served us, we could not take another bite, but the desserts were so tempting we had to have something sweet, so we opted for a frappuccino from Café Alcudia from Rosarito, to try and shake off the sleepiness caused from overeating, and a dessert which ended up being a midnight snack was a mini-cheesecake from the Livita bakery, the tiny cheesecake had strawberries, blueberries and raspberries, all flavors that work well together, and due to the portion being personal sized, it was a perfect ending for a long day of eating.

This festival marks the start of fishing season in Puerto Nuevo, which is why they invite everyone to visit Puerto Nuevo to partake in these recipes and enjoy the Baja California experience.
