Big win for Tijuana Xolos in final home game

One more game in Leon left in the Apertura regular season.

TIJUANA - Club Tijuana Xoloitzcuintles finished their home participation in the regular stage of the Apertura season of the Liga Bancomer MX with a 4-1 win over Atlante in the Estadio Caliente. The win keeps the faint hopes alive for Xolos to still reach the playoffs if enough results go their way this weekend, they win at Leon next weekend, and enough results go their way next weekend.

Club Tijuana got off to a fast start and took a 1-0 early lead, In the 11th minute Fernando Arce sent in a through ball to where Fidel Martinez who was in an offside position was smart enough to leave the ball alone to where Dario Benedetto came and blasted the ball into the net.

Things then turned ugly for Xolos in the first. One of their on field leaders, Fernando Arce was ejected from the game after seeing a direct red card in the 38th minute for something he said before an Atlante free kick. Arce did not do anything else that would warrant a red card.

Center Referee Francisco Chacon would then award a controversial penalty kick to the visitors one minute before halftime. Angel Sepulveda stepped up and hit a weak shot that Cirilo Saucedo seemed to control, but the ball went right through his hands and ito the net for the equalizing goal.

For the second half the show of the referee continued. In the 55th minute Chacon award a wrongful penalty to Xolos, since the foul in the play had been committed outside of the box. Cristian Pellerano took advantage and sent in a powerful shot to once again give the Xolos the lead.

Tijuana took a more defensive posture, but still seemed more dangerous on counter attacks than anything the visitors could do. In the 68th minute Dario Benedetto and Atlante’s Sergio Perez got into a shoving match after the Argentine bounced the ball off of Perez. This action would have big consequences as one play later Benedetto dribbled by Perez and the Atlante defender had to foul him to avoid a dangerous play on his goal. Perez was shown a second yellow and ejected from the match.

In the 74th Dario Benedetto would cap off a spectacular performance with a brace. Richard Ruiz had dribbled into the box and was appealing a penalty kick when he went down. Benedetto took advantage of the loose ball to hit it home. A fourth goal was added in the 83rd minute when Pellerano sent a through ball to Richard Ruiz who dribbled around the goalkeeper and shot into an empty net.

Club Tijuana will now travel to Leon for their final game of the regular season. Xolos are yet to win on the road, but if they pick up the three points in Leon there is a long sh

ot that Tijuana sneaks into the playoffs.
