MEXICO CITY- After several scandals, Justin Bieber's tour through Latin America began its end last night, with the first of several concerts in Mexico at the famous Foro Sol in Mexico City. But, before his walk onto the stage, the Canadian singer shared via Twitter his excitement of having to meet the president of Mexico, Enrique Peña Nieto, and his family:
Bieber, not being aware of the current political situation in the country, naively thought this would be a harmless or "cool" event to share, but the President's social media handlers thought otherwise, which is why they came out right away and denied the Peña Nieto met with Canada's number one pop-star.
Criticism of the meeting quickly spread across the Mexican web and social media even after the Presidency's denial.
Today, there was a "corrective-tweet" from Bieber, stating that he only met his family, not the president himself:
It seems more likely that the little pre-concert rendezvous is being denied in order to avoid any possible controversy, mostly for two reasons: Peña Nieto officially had a scheduled meeting with his cabinet and in place of it, it would seem like he ignored his political duties in order to shake hands with the pop singer, or, it could've turn out to be something similar to what happened in 2012, when the president's daughter, Paulina Peña, angered fans of British boy-band One Direction after they supposedly bragged about their father buying all first five rows of seats so that they and their friends could attend their concert in Mexico City. "One Directioners" complained about the injustice of it all, but Paulina denied it all and said:
"The account about the tickets to One Direction is false,
I don't like that group, I like Justin Bieber more, I love him."
It does seem plausible that at least Peña's family met him, after all, her daughter is an admirer and the Presidency has more to gain from keeping the meeting hidden than Justin Bieber has to gain from inventing a story like that. But did the President meet hiM? What do you think?
