Tijuana mayor and U.S. Embassy in Mexico strengthen ties

Ambassador Anthony Wayne met with mayor Astiazarán last week

TIJUANA.- Improving relationships between the United States and the dozens of border cities and towns seems to be mostly a job left to local officials on both sides of the divide, but sometimes, it helps to have a national representative strengthen those relationships with mayors, like U.S .Ambassador to Mexico Earl Anthony Wayne did when he met with Tijuana mayor Jorge Astiazarán Orcí to address issues like public safety, economic development, and border crossings.

During the meeting—held at the Mayor's Official Meeting Room—, Jorge Astiazarán thanked the North American diplomat's visit, acknowledging his fight against modern slavery and human trafficking around the world.

The mayor talked to Wayne about the issue of long wait-times at the border crossing, in hopes of working together to find alternatives that could lower them.

Likewise, he recognized the collaborative efforts of several governments and entities from both nations in the fight against organized crime and overall violence in cities, as well as the work being done to promote economic and tourism development in the binational region.

For his part, Ambassador Wayne highlighted the important commercial ties between Tijuana and the state of California to the north, a relationship that has contributed to strengthening both economies.

Also present during the reception, which took place on the 21st of January, were Bernardo Padilla Muñoz, interior minister for the city; the Public Safety Minister, Alejandro Lares Valladares; the Tijuana Economic Development Minister (Sedeti) Xavier Peniche Bustamante; the U.S. Consulate General, Andrew S.E. Erickson; and the Economic and Political Affairs consul, Jason Vorderstrasse.
