Home Sweet Home for Xolos, 2-1 win over Monterrey

Xolos take another win at the Estadio Caliente to extend unbeaten streak.

TIJUANA - Club Tijuana Xoloitzcuinltes de Caliente once again relayed on their home field advantage to take the three points of the match. They continue their impressive unbeaten streak at home, and have now won all three home matches this season.

The first half saw each team have it's moments of dominance and each have their opportunities to open the scoring. It was mostly the home side who enjoyed the possession of the ball, but the visitors looked very dangerous on the counter attack.

Cristian Pellerano tested the goalkeeper from distance, but Jonathan Orozco the Monterrey goalie was up to the test. Fidel Martinez tried to follow up the rebound but was flagged for an offside position as he tried to look back to pass to an incoming Fernando Arce.

Marlon de Jesus had the best scoring opportunity but of the first half when he was fed a through ball on the left side of the box on a counter attack. Once de Jesus was in front of goalkeeper Cirilo Saucedo he tried to cross his shot to the far post but the ball went well wide.

Club Tijuana captain Javier Gandolfi had a goal saving slid tackle minutes later as Neri Cardozo was going to shot right in front of Saucedo.

The first half ended a midst a shower of boos from the crowd as they were disappointed in the form of the team who was not able to score. The front players did not seem on point during those initial 45 minutes. Fidel Martinez could never find himself in the middle of the field and on the few occasions he did open wide was when he seemed like his old self. Herculez Gomez continued his on going battle with the goal.

For the second half the game continued the same rhythm with Tijuana enjoying more of the ball at their feet. But not finding a way to break through on the scoreboard. American striker Herculez Gomez was subbed out in the 60th minute for Argentine Dario Benedetto who is slowly making his return from injury. Gomez was heavily booed by the Xolos fans having missed a golden opportunity minutes earlier with the goal wide open.

In the 65th minute Cesar "Chelito" Delgado shocked the entire Estadio Caliente with a long range shot the creeped into Cirilo Saucedo's left post. Monterrey had not really pressured in the second half, but now had the lead in the match and the chance to hand Xolos their first loss since April 20th of 2013.

In the 75th minute Fidel Martinez took a corner kick from the right hand side of the field which was flicked by Elio Castro in the center of the box. Dario Benedetto appeared all alone in the second post and smashed the ball into the roof of the net for the equalizing goal. This is the first goal of the Xolos scored by a forward player this season.

With the draw in their hand Coloitzcuintles manager Cesar Farias sent in attacking substitutions as he sent in Joe Corona, who is also slowly returning from injury for Fernando Arce.

Club Tijuana would find their reward five minutes form the end of the match. Dario Benedetto opened up wide right to receive a pass. He sent in a long cross to the other side of the box where Jesus Hernandez headered the ball to the right side post. Cristian Pellerano was there to tap in the ball with his head to give the home side the lead and net his third goal of the season.

The Xolos were able to see out the remaining minutes of the match to seal the win and improve to 10 points in the season; 9 of which have been from home matches. Next week they will travel to Torreon to face the dangerous Santos Laguna on Valentines Day.
