Tijuana mayor meets with federal officials seeking more border resources

Jorge Astiazarán is looking to improve ports-of-entry and trade

TIJUANA.- Mayor Jorge Astiazarán met with the Foreign Ministry's deputy secretary for North America, Sergio Alcocer Martínez, and other officials involved in binational affairs who could help secure needed funding for economic development, tourism, industry, education and cultural projects along the border.

"Constant dialogue with officials dedicated to moving the city forward from other places in the world is important; we can work together to modernize every area that needs improvement, with border crossings and trade being the more relevant issues," said Mayor Astiazarán.

The Tijuana mayor noted how the meeting mostly was about gathering information on what the city can do to pull in more federal and binational funds, possibly through the Mexican International Cooperation for Development Agency (Amexcid), towards improving border infrastructure that would help streamline trade and also help promote Tijuana as a tourism destination, especially in the medical tourism business.

Also present during the meeting were interior secretary, Bernardo Padilla Muñoz; Tijuana Economic Development Secretary, Xavier Peniche Bustamante; Mexico consul general in San Diego, Remedios Gómez Arnau, among others.
