Liga MX Clausura 2014 Week 13 Rewind

The Super Clasico takes all of the headlines.

MEXICO - The Clausura 2014 season of LIGA Bancomer MX is entering its final stages and the competition for playoff spots starts to heat up. Relegation drama also starts to take shape as a fourth team is pushed into the mix. Here is all of the highlights from the 13th match day in Liga MX.

Queretaro 2-1 Tijuana Xolos

Club Tijuana Xoloitzcuintles are still winless on the road and add yet another loss away from the comforts at the Estadio Caliente.The result complicates things a little for the Xolos in their battle to finish in the top eight and reach the playoffs. READ THE FULL MATCH REPORT HERE.

Santos 2-1 Pumas UNAM

This match probably deserved a lot more attention than what it got due to the high profile match of the Super Clasico. Two powerful sides matched up in this one, and it was Mexican National Team striker Oribe Peralta who was the difference maker. The visiting Pumas took an early lead, but two goals from Peralta including one in the 92nd minute allowed the home side to take all three points and climb all the way to the 3rd position in the league table.

Cruz Azul 1-3 Atlas

In one of the most shocking results of the week and maybe the season, relegation threaten Atlas traveled to Mexico City and handed league leaders Cruz Azul their first loss at home of the season. The win allows Atlas to breath a little easier in their battle to avoid relegation.

Veracruz 3-1 Pachuca

In another surprising result relegation candidate Veracruz got an important win over the team who walked into this weekend’s matches in 3rd place. This win by Veracruz also allows them to take a sigh of relieve in their relegation campaign as well as put pressure on other relegation sides like Atlante and Puebla.

Toluca 2-1 Tigres UANL

Toluca had to move up their match from their regular schedule on Sunday afternoon to Saturday evening due to their CONCACAF Champions League participation. Toluca took an early lead in the first half, but American midfielder Jose Torres equalized for the visitors in the second half. Former Xolos striker Raul Mava grabbed a 92nd minute winner for Toluca to inch them within a point of the league leaders Cruz Azul.

Monterrey 3-2 Atlante

The visiting Atlante came into the match with the added weight of knowing that both Atlas and Veracruz had won earlier in the day. The pressure would be too much for Atlante and Monterrey was able to get the three points at home. The visitors tried to react and got within one goal, but it was too little too late.

Chiapas FC 1-0 Morelia

The weekend’s worst game saw two lackluster teams playing each other. Neither team had a clear idea of what to do in the attacking portion of the field. The game seemed to be heading into a boring 0-0 draw, but in the 92nd minute Wilberto Cosme found the lone goal of the match to give the home side all three points.

Puebla 1-1 Leon

Puebla and Leon played out to a draw that helps neither team. Thanks to thanks to the other results Puebla are now in the thick of the relegation race being surpassed by Atlas. There is now only a 5 point cushion for Puebla over Atlante. Leon needed the win in order to get back into playoff contention, the draw keeps the reigning Mexican league champs out of the playoff zone.

Chivas 0-4 Club America

The match everyone was waiting for, the Super Clasico ended with a humiliating loss for the home side Chivas of Guadalajara. Luis Gabriel Rey scored twice in less than 15 minutes and the visitors never looked back. Mexican National Team striker Raul Jimenez added a third before Luis Angel Mendoza added the fourth both in the second half to seal the win. With this result America have now beaten Chivas three games in a row outscoring their bitter rivals 8-0 in the process.
