Mexico drops out of race for 2024 Olympics

The country is in no position to host an event of this magnitude, officials confirm

MEXICO CITY.- Although there was hope that some Mexican city could be in the running to pick up the Summer Olympic Games of 2024, today it appears as if that dream has unravelled, as both the Mexican Olympic Committee and the Sport's Commission of the House of Representatives have reached the conclusion that, due to the country's economic and infrastructural difficulties, this would not be feasible.

Alain Lunzenfichter, French sports journalist, tweeted the following news:

Felipe Muñoz Kapamas, president of the Mexican Sport's Commission of the House of Representatives, announced that Mexico will not be a candidate for OG 2024.

Felipe "El Tibio" Muñoz is also a former olympic medalist and, along with the rest of the Committee, had requested an analysis from the Ministry of Finance of the House of Representatives, the National Sports Commission, The National Olympic Committee, the Secretary of the Treasury and the cities which were mentioned as possible hosts, to evaluate how feasible it would be for Mexico to organize the Summer Olympics again, 54 years after the Mexico City Olympics in 1968.

In the end, Deputy Adriana Gonzalez's proposal to seek the host's chair at the 2024 Olympics was rejected.

For a while now, Guadalajara has been considered the best Mexican city to host the games. After all, in 2011 it hosted the Parapan and PanAm Games, and in 2017 will host the FINA World Championship.

But the Committee has made it clear that neither this city, nor any other Mexican city is equipped to handle the world's largest sporting event. It had also already rejected a binational candidature, between Tijuana and San Diego (although San Diego continues to analyze its individual candidacy).

It is still too early to point out the the likely favorites to accommodate the Summer Olympics of '24, but some have set their sights on Paris, Rome and South Africa as possible options. The United States has hopes that Los Angeles, Boston, Dallas, Philadelphia and San Francisco will be considered contenders.

The decision will be made in 2017, one year after the games in Rio de Janeiro in 2016. After Rio plays host, it is Tokyo's turn in 2020.
