Liga MX Clausura 2014 Week 14 Rewind

Mexico City Derby the big storyline.

MEXICO - Week 14 of the Clausura 2014 season on LIGA Bancomer MX is in the books and only three regular season matches remain. The battle for the playoffs keeps getting tighter and tighter; while the relegation race seems to be leaving one team destined for second division soccer next football year.

Morelia 1-1 Veracruz:

Week 14 got under way in Morelia as Monarcas Morelia hosted Veracruz. The relegation threaten Veracruz took the lead and looked to be heading for an important three points that would have practically assured their first division safety. But the home side was able to equalize and rescue a point. The one point still helps Veracruz while it keeps Morelia within possibilities of a playoff ticket.

Tijuana Xolos 3-1 Toluca:

Club Tijuana got back inside of the top eight with an important victory at home over second place Toluca. The visitors did play with plenty of substitutions in their starting lineup due to their midweek CONCACAF Champions League (CCL) matches, but Xolos presented a strong starting eleven and looked for the three points from the opening whistle despite having the same CCL responsibilities. Club America 1-2 Cruz Azul:

The match of the week ended with league leaders Cruz Azul hanging on and taking a big win over their Mexico City neighboring rivals Club America. The visitors jumped to a two goal lead in the first half, and had a man advantaged in the second half; but an 85th minute goal from Mexican National Team striker Raul Jimenez brought some late drama. Almost in identical fashion to the Clausura 2013 championship final, America goalkeeper Moises Muñoz nearly scored the equalizing goal off of an injury time corner kick.

Pachuca 1-3 Chivas Guadalajara:

Following their humiliating 0-4 loss in the Super Clasico, Chivas fired their manager Jose Luis "Güero" Real and brought in former Mexican National Team manager Ricardo Antonio Lavolpe. The Argentine manager could not have asked for a better debut as his Chivas side came from behind to take an important win on the road. The victory now has Chivas in 8th place in the league table (final playoff spot).

Monterrey 2-2 Santos:

Santos fought back from two goals down to earn a point and stay within the elite of the Mexican league table. Mexican National Team striker Oribe Peralta got the equalizing goal near the end in a similar fashion to last week's last minute game winner against Pumas UNAM. The biggest story from the match was the return from injury from Chilean international Humberto "Chupete" Suazo. The striker had missed the majority of this season with a shoulder injury and came in as a second half substitute.

Leon 1-1 Queretaro:

The reigning Mexican league champions Leon maintain themselves outside of the playoff zone by not being able to beat another "weak" opponent. Last week the hamps drew by the same scoreline against Puebla, and now were not able to beat the wage-less Queretaro. Due to their upcoming midweek match in Brazil for the Copa Libertadores, Leon sent out a number of backup players. Players like striker Miguel Sabah who went from hero to villain by converting a penalty kick to give Leon the 1-0 lead, but missed another penalty when the score was 1-1. The 2013 MLS Golden Boot Winner Camilo Sanvezzo scored his first goal in Mexico following his controversial signing for Queretaro to save the point for the visitors.

Atlas 0-0 Puebla:

Both teams added a valuable point to their campaigns to avoid relegation. This combined by other results made it a good outcome for both sides. The game itself did not give many exciting moments to report on.

Pumas UNAM 2-1 Chiapas FC:

The Mexico City side got back to winning ways and combined with the Santos draw allowed them to climb into the 3rd place spot of the league table behind Cruz Azul and Toluca. A Dante Lopez brace in the first half was enough to see the home side take the win. Aviles Hurtado scored a spectacular bicycle kick goal in the second half to get the visitors closer and make the rest of the match an edge of the seat affair. In the end Pumas were able to hang on and take the points.

Atlante 0-2 Tigres UANL:

The historic Atlante could be sealing their fate to play second division soccer next footbal year as they fall at home to Tigres. The relegation race could be officially wrapped up next weekend with two matches to spare if Atlante fall to powerhouse Santos Laguna in Torreon, as well as a small combination of results with Puebla and Veracruz matches.
