Liga MX Clausura 2014 Week 17 Rewind

A look back at the final matchday of the regular season in Mexico.

MEXICO - The final match day in the regular season of Mexican soccer was played out this weekend. Here is a look at everything that happened.

Querétaro 3-4 Pachuca:

Both teams came into the match needing a win, both were tied in points (21) and a win would practically assure them playoffs. By the 65th minute the home side Queretaro had a 3-0 lead with two goals from Ricardo Da Silva and one from Camilo Sanvezzo. But the visiting Pachuca turned it all around in the final 16 minutes of play with two goals from Enrique Esqueda and two from Abraham Carreño to take the win and the three points.

Tijuana Xolos 1-2 Leon:

Club Tijuana came into the match needing a win or a draw to assure themselves their place in the playoffs, Leon needed the win and a lot of luck in the rest of the weekend matches. Sebastian Maz gave the visitors the lead in the first half, and Luis Montes doubled the lead in the second half. Cristian Pellerano cut that lead in half and gave the Xolos hope of an equalizer, but that goal would never come. The result meant that both sides would have to wait and see if other results favored them to stay in the top eight.

Cruz Azul 2-1 Pumas UNAM:

This was a waterdown Mexico City derby as both teams came into the final match day with their liguilla qualification already wrapped up. The home side Cruz Azul sent out an alternative lineup to rest some of their players who had been involved in the tough CONCACAF Champions League Final. The visitors took the lead in the 72nd minute with a header from Pablo Daniel Ramirez. But the league leaders quickly turned the game around with goals from Rogelio Chavez and mauro Formica in the 79th and 81st minute.

Veracruz 2-2 Santos:

Another match where there was not much to play for. Santos just needed to avoid a huge loss in order to qualify into the playoffs, and the home side Veracruz had already accomplished the season objective of avoiding relegation. Cristian Borja gave the host the lead early in the 5th minute. Jesus Escoboza then tied the game in the 33rd with a superb strike. Mexican National Team striker Oribe Peralta gave Santos the lead in the 60th minute, but seven minutes later former Tijuana Xolos Alfredo moreno tied the game for Veracruz.

Tigres UANL 2-1 Atlas:

Atlas came into the match needing only a win to assure themselves a place in the playoffs, thanks to the Tijuana Xolos loss. Despite their season objective was to avoid relegation, they still dreamed of participating in the liguilla. Tigres on the other hand had already been eliminated from all playoff possibilities. Former Atlas defender Hugo Ayala gave Tigres the lead in the first half. The visitors tied the game and gave themselves hopes in the 72nd with a Jahir Barraza goal. But those hopes were quickly extinguished by Mexican National Team hopeful Alan Pulido in the 75th minute. This loss heavily benefited the Tijuana Xolos as well as the reigning champions Leon.

Chiapas FC 5-2 Atlante:

Chiapas had the slightest (almost impossible) hopes of reaching the playoffs. They would have had to win by an eight goal difference and hope for a combination of results in the Sunday matches. The home side did score plenty of goals and got a big win, but not big enough. With the big loss Atlante says goodbye to first division soccer as they are now heading to the second division as the relegated team.

Puebla 3-1 Morelia:

Morelia was another team that had been benefited by the earlier results and just needed a win against the a team who is considered by far a weaker opposition to assure themselves a playoff ticket. In a reflection of what has been a nightmare of a season Morelia fell 3-1, the Michoacan team was eliminated from the Copa Libertadores before the group stage even begun and they had four different managers sit on the bench this season. This loss plus the Atlas loss ended up securing a playoff spot for Club Tijuana Xoloitzcuintles de Caliente.

Toluca 1-1 Club America:

Toluca looked to put CONCACAF Champions League disappointment behind them and America looked for a win that would have sent them to the number three spot, opportunity they had thanks to the Pumas loss and Santos draw. Both sides needed the win to head into the playoffs with some confidence, but the 1-1 draw gave neither team that confidence. America finish in 5th place and will not be able to have home field advantage in the next round.

Chivas 0-1 Monterrey:

The results throughout the weekend presented Chivas of Guadalajara the option to just win at home and qualify into the playoffs. But the one goal loss to Monterrey means that Chivas will be the only one of the "Big Four" to miss out. The loss also ended up assuring Leon the opportunity to defend their championship.
