USMNT 2-0 Azerbaijan: A rusty USA gets win in first preparation match

USA finds a way to win.

SAN FRANCISCO - The United States Men's National Team (USMNT) played out their first World Cup preparation match now with the full official World Cup squad. The opponent on hand was the small country of Azerbaijan who did not offer much of a competition.

The Yanks did not have their best performance and struggled at time to break through the visiting defense, but at the end of the match they found a way to get the win to ease the pressure. Azerbaijan came into the match looking to frustrate the USMNT attack, they set themselves up defensively and it worked out for them for the majority of the match.

The U.S. players who have been in training camp for a few weeks now all seemed a bi rusty as they could not find a way to complete passes; especially during the first half.

The most dangerous plays came in from the set pieces as newcomer striker Chris Wondolowski showed great skill to head the ball on target. "Wondo" forced the visiting goalkeeper into several good saves in the first half in order to maintain the score at zeros.

In the second half the USMNT continued to dominate possession and push the Europeans deeper into their own half. But still could not find a way to break through the defensive wall.

As shown in the first half; it would take a set piece to open the scoring. Second half substitute and the new number 10 Mixx Diskerud attempted a header off of a free kick cross. The ball fell to Michael Brqadley who had his shot clear off the line. Diskerud was aware of the rebound and slammed the ball into the back of the net.

Minutes later a well placed Brad Davis corner kick found a wide open Aron Johannsson who walked up to the ball and put his head through the ball to send it to the back of the net to double the U.S. lead.

The Americans were able to see out the two goal lead and finish with the clean sheet.
