7 things to know about the Tijuana Book Fair

The event will take place May 30 through June 8

TIJUANA.- This Friday, on May 30, the thirty-second edition of the traditional Tijuana Book Fair (Feria del Libro de Tijuana) will commence and will continue until June 8th. The event, which is considered to be one of the most important literary offerings in the region, will once again take place this year at CECUT, which is the where the giant IMAX dome is located.

This is the first Book Fair organized under the new administration of the IMAC - the Municipal Art and Culture Institute- led by its new director Jesus Flors Campbell, and in collaboration with the ICBC - Baja California Institute of Culture - and the local Book Store Union.

Here are some things to know and look out for at the fair:

1.- The Book Fair is this city's cultural patrimony

After 32 annual editions, the Tijuana Book Fair has become an example of cultural richness in our border region. In addition to promoting reading, the event also has the goal of promoting various artistic strains that have developed in the region.

With the support of different public institutions and organizations in benefit of Tijuana's residents, the Book Fair has managed to evolve and strengthen with each annual edition. This is why it is very important that we all take part in this event to ensure that this can continue to take place each year in this city.

2.- Become a Prosumer-learn and create

For all of those whose interest in literature goes beyond reading books, and for those who wish to learn more about how to write their own stories, why not become a "prosumer"? A prosumer is someone who not only consumes but also creates content. The Book fair has a very diverse lineup, and is completely free to the public. The event includes workshops on auto-fiction, japanese illustration, graphic narrative, urban storytelling, argumentative writing and storytelling, along with many other events catering to culinary and business related interests.

3.- Enriching Discussions

Included in the literary program are a variety of conferences, book presentations, and documentary screenings starting Saturday, May 31st. These events will enable you to experience the authors' perspectives on diverse topics including feminism, religion, art, and politics.

The complete schedule of conferences can be viewed here.

4.- Literary Diversity

More than 100 local writers and 100 visiting writers will be promoting their books, along with 80 presenters of diverse literary works. If you have been looking for a specific book and haven't been able to find it, you might have better luck at the upcoming Tijuana Book Fair as there will be many stands with books for sale. If it is not at the Fair, it doesn't exist.

5.- Artistic Events

According to official press, during the week of the event, there will be 46 dance and music presentations, including special presentations by the Youth Singing Ensemble (Ensamble Lirico Juvenil) and the Tijuana Youth Orchestra (Orquesta Juvenil de Tijuana) on inauguration day at 5pm.

Additionally, on Saturday May 31, Eugenia Leon will be presenting a concert for free starting at 8pm.

Amongst activities planned at the close of the event, is a presentation by the Lux Boreal Contemporary Dance Company, on Saturday June 7, with an adaptation of Swan Lake. Finally, on Sunday, June 8 for a nominal price, Nortec will be playing along side the Tijuana Youth Symphony.

6.- If books seem to expensive

This Fair is one of the best opportunities in the region to compare prices and purchase the best books at best prices. You may also visit the second-hand book stands for even better value.

7.- Event Convenience

The event will take place just a few minutes away from the border, which means it is the perfect opportunity for San Diegans who are interested in cultural offerings in Tijuana. One of the best things about CECUT hosting the events is that it is nearby the Plaza Rio shopping center, which offers many restaurants and other places to visit. Additionally, the shopping center's parking lot is just across the street from the event and inexpensive.

We invite our readers to chime. Tell us about your experience in prior years at this event, or any additional tips for readers.
