Baja California

Ensenada is Named World Surfing Reserve

The Designation was Awarded by the Save the Waves Coalition

ENSENADA.- One of Baja California’s prime tourist attractions will be internationally recognized by the Save the Waves Coalition. This June 21st, Ensenada’s surfing beaches will be officially designated as a World Surfing Reserve by the Coalition.

Becoming a Surfing Reserve means that apart from being designated as prime surf area, the area surrounding the waves, to include wildlife and surrounding nature, will be recognized and supported. This dedication will be in line with a separate initiative to create a state park comprised of 42 hectareas in the San Miguel Basin, a place that has been a boasted surfing hot spot since 1950, and to this day and is a favorite amongst international surfers because of the outstanding wave heights.

Ensenada’s Todos Santos Bay will be among five of the World Surfing Reserves, along with Malibu, California; Ericeria, Portugal; Manly Beach, Australia; Santa Cruz, California; and Huanchaco, Peru. In Baja California, the reserve will include Salsipuedes Beach, San Miguel, Stacks, Todos Santos Island, and Tres Emes.

Save the Waves was founded in 2009 by a group of surfers, scientists, and environmentalists who decided to combine sport enthusiasm with nature preservation. In the near future, Punta de Lobos, Chile will also be added to the World Surfing Reserve List.
