Obama Decides To Take Action in Favor of Immigrants

Plans Executive Action in Light of Congress Dead-Lock

UNITED STATES.- President Obama has announced that he will act on his own via executive action in relation to immigration, given House Speaker John Boehner's refusal to vote on the topic of immigration during this election year.

According to President Obama, "if Congress won't act, I will" who reiterated that basically, if republicans don't like this they should vote on legislation on the issue.

What will Obama do?

The President is planning to send more resources from the interior of the country to the border to detain and deport undocumented immigrants, although similar efforts throughout the country will also continue.

Specifically, this weekend, the White House requested 2 billion dollars from Congress to aid with the surge of undocumented minors along the Southern border, in order to be able to fast-track judicial processes and deportations of the minors.

The President also criticized Republicans' "most recent excuse" not to act. They have stated that now is not the time to vote on immigration reform because of the surge in immigrant children arriving at the border. Boehner blames Obama for the outcome stating that "the American people and their elected officials don't trust him to enforce the law as written."

"Their argument appears to be that the current system doesn't work so we shouldn't do anything to fix it," said Obama in a recent press conference. "It doesn't make sense. It is not honest. It is just politics, plain and simple."

"If House Republicans were really worried about the fact that I make too many executive decisions, than the best solution is to approve legislation", said Obama. "Approve the bill. Fix this problem. Don't just say that you agree that this needs to be done."

A year after the Senate approved the immigration reform bill, the House majority have not taken up a vote on their own version of the bill, one of the biggest priorities of Obama's second term.

Efe reports that Obama has also directed his team to identify "additional measures and send recommendations before the end of summer on steps that can be taken without Congress, within its current legal limits, to try and fix the immigration problem as best as possible.

However, Obama has affirmed that despite whatever executive actions he might take, nothing is a replacement for Congress's capability to approve immigration reform and that he will continue to push for this.
