Binational Concert Took Place to Benefit Central American Minors

The event collected donations of toys and other articles for minor immigrants

SAN DIEGO.- The San Diego Symphonic Orchestra and the Baja California Orquestra hosted a concert in benefit of hundreds of Central American migrants that recently were transferred for processing to California.

The musical act titled "Music without Borders" was arranged by the civil group Border Angels at the Friendship Park at the edge of the U.S./Mexico Border.

According to Enrique Morones, Executive Director and founder of Border Angels, "we have seen in Murrieta the worst side of the American spirit."

The activist states, "I saw what happened there and I witnessed the Mayor and Police blocking the busses."

"Today we want to show the better side of Mexican and American spirit by way of music. Music is just like love and has no borders. We are offering this concert to these children who have suffered so much," according to Morones.

Musicians of the two orchestras played on either side of the border pieces by Astor Piazzolla, Mozart, and Bach as well as some Mexican songs, for about an hour.

One of activists standing on the U.S. side was Oscar Nominated Mexican actor Demian Bichir, for his role in "A Better Life", a recognized pro-immigrant activists in the U.S.

"This is a humanitarian crisis that has impacted the whole world. It is now reaching the children and when this is a problem that affects children from any nationality it causes us to lose hope," said the acclaimed actor.

"The problem starts at the source with so many Mexican politicians who have not lived up to the promises made to their people", he added.

Immigration attorneys were also present at the park and provided legal counsel and referrals to people that have been deported from the United States, like Yolanda Barona, leader of Border Moms USA-TIJ, who created the society to support women who are facing deportation.

This Monday, Border Angels announced "Operation Teddy Bear" which has set the goal of collecting ten tons of toys and other items for Central American migrant children being housed in San Diego, California.
