Junk Food Will be Restricted on TV and in Theatres

Junk Food ads will be strictly prohibited in theatres where children’s movies are played, and will be limited to certain hours on TV

MEXICO.- A new strategy to prevent childhood obesity, diabetes, and overweight children in general has been implemented by Mexico’s Federal Government with the and will be targeted specifically at theatres and television networks. Specifically, the broadcasting of ads for junk food, or foods with low nutritional value during children’s normal TV viewing hours will be restricted in order to prevent them from consuming these foods at a young age.

As of this week, television networks were advised of these new regulations by the Secretary of Health, which will apply to sodas, snacks, candy, and chocolate, on both local and cable channels. These types of ads many only play during the week between 2:30 and 7:30, and on weekends between 7am and 7:30pm. In cinemas, ads of these nature are completely prohibited in showings aimed at children, as determined by the movie’s parental guidance rating.

Failure to comply with these new measures may result in the fines of up almost 1.5 million pesos.
