Puebla's Efrain Cortes suspended 6 games for spitting at Xolos' Benedetto

Is it fair?

The Week 1 match between Club Tijuana Xoloitzcuintles and Puebla FC on the the opening night of the Apertura 2014 season of Liga MX was a really heated battle. Visiting Puebla went on to take the win 0-1 at the Estadio Caliente.

During the course of the match as the home side pushed for an equalizing goal, tempers flared in Tijuana and players were facing off against each other. In one play both the

Xolos' Dario Benedetto and Puebla's Efrain Cortes were shown yellow cards for their involvement in an altercation. The referee's caution cards did not calm Puebla's Colombian defender who went on to spit in the face of the Argentine striker.

The incident was reported to the center referee by his assistant and Cortes was shown a direct red card for what he had done. On Monday the league's disciplinary committee took the decision to sanction the player with a six-match ban announced by the league on their official website.

Cortes will be eligible to play again at the midway point of the season, Week 8 when the team travels to Queretaro on Friday September 12th.
