Manchester United to pay british record transfer fee for Angel Di Maria

Di Maria is expected to received the No. 7 shirt

After originally stating Angel Di Maria would stay at Real Madrid after all, it now appears the winger will finally sign for English Premier League side Manchester United. Louis van Gaal's team will pay a British record transfer fee of £59.7 million ($98.9 million) to the Spanish giants as one of the summer's longest transfer sagas finally comes to a close.

Manchester United have gotten off to a very disappointing start to the Premier League season under new manager Van Gaal. The club hopes Di Maria's signing will give it a boost as the club attempt to return to the top four of English football. The Argentine is United's fourth signing of the summer and follows the signatures of Ander Herrera, Luke Shaw and Marcos Rojo. Manchester United hopes to have Di Maria ready for its game at the weekend against Burnley, but due to work permit delays, may not have Di Maria until the following week.

Di Maria is expected to received the No. 7 shirt which was formally worn by both David Beckham and former Real Madrid teammate Cristiano Ronaldo. In four seasons at Real Madrid, Di Maria tallied 36 goals and a staggering 62 assists in 190 appearances. United will hope Di Maria can add fire power to an attack that has struggled to ignite thus far, scoring a mere two goals while giving up three.

Di Maria had originally been linked to Paris Saint-Germain, but due to Financial Fair Play the French club was unable to pay the requested transfer fee to Real Madrid. The signing of Di Maria can be seen as a coup. Manchester United has had a difficult time attracting players to Old Trafford this summer. Unable to offer players Champions League football, United has struggled to sign high-calibre talent. Now with the signing of Di Maria, the club hopes it has turned a corner and will be able to add two or three more players before the transfer window closes.
