Beer of the Week: Jack Porter by Cerveceria Cardera

Hints of chocolate and coffee with just a touch of toasted oak

ENSENADA.- When I was told that I would be responsible for this week's Beer of the Week column, I thought that I'd have a hard time describing flavors that I don't usually try out. We all have different tastes when it comes to flavors and aromas, and I usually stick to the same trusted beers, usually ones that are sour or citric wheat based varieties.

But, I guess you have to take a risk sometimes in order to discover new things and that is exactly what I did last Wednesday when I got a chance to try a new beer that I actually really enjoyed, especially because it was stronger than the types of beer I usually like. This time, I am talking about a porter by Cerveza Cardera.

You might have already tried it, but if not, let me tell you about this beer crafted in Ensenada. The Jack Porter gets its name because it is aged with oak pieces soaked in Jack Daniels whiskey. It contains 7% alcohol content and is remarkable because of its oakey flavor with hints of chocolate and coffee. Visually, it is very dark colored with golden colored head and with a subtle aroma of chocolate and even subtler smell of coffee.

Dry and ideally paired with red meat, the Jack Porter is available at La Terraza bar and soon too at Ydalgo in Tijuana.
