Nutrition Campaign Launched in Tijuana's Elementary Schools

Program will study problem and develop course of action

TIJUANA.- With the goal of reducing childhood obesity levels in the city, Tijuana's City Government launched a program called ‘Unidos por una Tijuana Saludable’, or "United for a Healthy Tijuana" in five elementary schools in the city.

Municipal Health Director, Luis Alonso Villegas, indicated that this program is a response to interest by Mayor Jorge Astiazarán, M.D. to implement programs that prevent an illness that is caused as a result of bad eating habits.

"Unfortunately, being overweight and obese is the number one health condition we are seeing in our residents, and especially in children. So, we met with experts to establish a strategy and offer adequate treatment to kids in public school", said Villegas.

Villegas explained that there will be three lines of action; the first will be to understand how prevalent this problem is in elementary school, and specifically in public elementary shools, via a height-weight measurement of 2,500 students in the public school system. Children with weight issues will receive additional attention in the areas of nutrition, physical educaton and psychology.

Second, physical education activities will be reemphasized in schools and water fountains will be installed so that children may reduce consumption of sugary drinks such as sodas and juices. Finally, lunch programs will be changed to ensure that meals have enough nutritional value for childhood development.

In order to do this, the Municipal Health Department has developed work teams to visit both shifts of five elementary schools.
