Overall Crime Levels Decrease in San Diego by 13% this Year

Fire Arson Increased by 21%

SAN DIEGO.- Countywide, property crime rates and even violent crime rates have decreased a little, but at the same time (and during the worst drought in decades), the rates of human-caused fires has increased. This according to the San Diego Association of Governments (SANDAG) in a recent report.

Crimes against private property include robbery of public or private addresses, personal items theft, and automobile theft. All decreased this year when compared to last, although this decrease comes after an increase two years ago.

There hasn't been a uniform reduction in all jurisdictions of the county, but far and wide the average has decreased. Del Mar received the most drastic decrease of 37% less compared with just a 3% decrease in La Mesa.

Dr. Cynthia Burke, Director of Criminal Justice Investigation for SANDAG states that there are many theories behind the decrease in crime levels. "Some authorities attribute this to increased crime prevention measures and proactive supervision of people with criminal records, usage of forensic technology to identify serial criminals, and the sharing of intelligence between jurisdictions" she said.

A total of 30,549 property crimes were reported in the first six months of 2014, which amounts to 19.4 per 1,000 residents, compared to 22.23 in 2013.

What has increased has been fire arson, which is has already surpassed 2013 levels in just the first half of this year.

In terms of homicide, rape, assault, robbery, and battery levels there has only been a decrease of 3.43 this year, amounting to a total of 5,400. Homicides alone decreased by seven percent this year, amounting to 38 in this year in course.
