The third annual Copa Cervezas de América 2014, or Beer Cup of The Americas 2014, took place in Santiago de Chile, where 500 beers from around 15 countries were tasted. Baja California craft beer dominated the competition.

Ruben Valenzuela, owner of BCB Tasting Room, said that at the event that took place earlier this month Cervecería Rámuri and Baja Brewing Co. were the labels that received the most prizes, the first won gold for a Pale Ale and a silver medal for its well known Imperial Stout.

Baja Brewing Co., was also recognized for its Cabotella with a silver medal, and bronze for its Baja Razz.

He indicated that Rámuri obtained the bronze medal with its Barley Wine back in 2012, which shows that it continues to stay ahead as a world-class brewery, along with other craft beers that won such as the Tempus, Texcoco Mystic Ales, Belcebu, Beer Factory, La Legendaria y La Reyna. San Diego's Coronado Brewing and Ballast Point also came out with a medal each.

Valenzuela says that this event is the most important in all of Latin America, and represents a very important market, which is why so many varieties and styles have emerged.

Arturo Gutierrez of the Tourism and Convention Committee for Tijuana (COTUCO) states that these recognitions continue to build upon the state's reputation for good cuisine and tourist appeal, and generate interest of the southern part of the American continent in this region for all it has to offer.

Additionally, it is proof that Tijuana and Baja California are catching on to new trends, and are strong competitors not only nationally, but internationally, when it comes to craft beer.

He reminds us that COTUCO created a Craft Beer Guide as a way to promote and highlight products in the region. Baja produces craft beers that stand-out because of their quality and national and international prestige.

He indicated that the Guide aimes to support local craft breweries that are still in development, until they become an icon in the city, and of course to attract a greater influx of tourists.

The guide details the local craft breweries, upcoming festivals related to craft beer, restaurants, tours, and a variety of options for visitors to choose from. "Our commitment is to promote the city and we have taken the message throughout the country, South America, and Southern California. Thanks to this, we have seen a large increase in the amount of tourists during holiday seasons" he said.
