Tijuana's Competitivity Ranking Increases

Also ranks well when compared to other cities with more than a million residents

TIJUANA.- The city's administration, via the Secretary of Economic Development (SEDETI), has announced that according to a study realized by the Mexican Institute of Competitivity, Tijuana ranks number 37th out of 78 Mexican cities in terms of competitivity and development. The prior study, which took place in 2012, had ranked the city in the 70th position.

According to Xavier Peniche Bustamante of SEDETI, with these results, Tijuana is now positioned in the mid-high range slot of compettiivity, which shows its capacity to attract and retain talent and investment-both national and foreign-maximizing the productivity and wellbeing of its residents. This is line with Mayor Jorge Astaizaran's goals for the city.

"In the Urban Competitivity Index study, 78 of the most important cities in the country were analyzed and over 90 different indicators of economic development and the quality of life of its inhabitants were studied. The diagnosis comes down to 10 structural factors that are considered key to competivity, and make cities capable of attracting investment, and of inspiring talent within them", said Peniche.

Tijuana moved up in the majority of the 10 factors, primarily because of an improvement in the Efficiency and Effectiveness of Government factor, moving up from 74th place to 18th place.

Some sub-indexes analyzed in the category of Efficient Governments includes budgetary information, income, commercial openness, property registration, formal sector employment, and growth of the urban footprint; among other factors.

Secretary Xavier Peniche also stated that Tijuana ranks eighth among cities with more than a million residents, a bump up from 11th place in the 2012 study, just under Valle de Mexico, Queretaro, Guadalajara, San Luis Potosi, Merida and Puebla, and ranking above Leon, Juarez, La Laguna and Toluca.
