ENSENADA.- The Tijuana-Ensenada free road is now in top condition for motorists since a 20 kilometer stretch has been completely repavemented, according to Alfonso Padres of Baja California's Secretary of Communications and Transportation (SCT).
Since last year, a 36 kilometer stretch of surface on the free road, beginning from La Fonda until San Miguel, has been undergoing repair work which has now completed.
The work was financed by the SCT's National Highway Conservation Program and included pavement, refurbishment of 57 drainage pipes, and reconstruction of high-level asphalt in some stretches, as well as both horizontal and vertical signage.
Installation of Signage
It is worth noting that the SCT has installed more than 500 signs this year alone on the Tijuana-Ensenada free road, especially in this very stretch, with the goal of improving road conditions.
Padres indicated that because of the rerouting of traffic from the toll road, due to the collapsed stretch, traffic has increased on the free road and signage has been installed with this in mind to make the route safer and more navigable.
The traffic load has increased exponentialy as a result of the toll road collapse, from an average of 1,740 vehicles per day to approximately 12,000. This is why it is important for drivers to respect road signage especially when it comes to speed limits, curves, passing zones, and livestock crossing areas.
Additionally, 5,500 reflective lane dividers were installed over a stretch of 55 kilometers, to facilitate night driving.
This will come as welcome news to travellers, especially in light of the fact that the planned September reopening of the toll road has now been delayed until December.
