5D Cinema: Virtual Reality Simulators in Rosarito

Go beyond 3D in Rosarito!

ROSARITO.- Tourism in Rosarito won't miss the sun now that summer is over, because a variety of activities have emerged and promise to keep visitors entertained and the economy active during the next couple of months. One of the most surprising new activities is Cinema 5D; an innovative, fun, and very inexpensive activity at a special inauguration price of just $50 pesos for two movies (that is less than $5 dollars!).

This business doesn't play common movies that we would see in a mainstream movie theatre. What you will see are movies that were created specifically to live the experience of 5D movies to the fullest extent possible.

What is a 5D Movie? We had a chance to chat with the man that brought this project to Rosarito, Marvin Morelos, who tells us that it is a similar experience to 4D movies but even more sensorially complete, because it includes a 3D image, and seat movements, and effects such as smoke, haze, bubbles, fire, air, rain, snow, and aromas that will take us inside at least 120 movies. Some of the movies are virtual reality simulators and terror flicks, and there are also ones specially created for children.

Marvin Morales tells us, "this idea came out of Europe. My wife is Euroopean and we lived there for almost five years. This concept is in all of the shopping centers and we said, "let's take this concept to Mexico and see how people react" and we have received very positive feedback, they tell us "there are fun things to do here and let's have a good time".

We listened to some recommendations and decided to try the 5D experience out with two movies that lasted ten minutes each. The first was a roller coaster simulator that provoked an adrenaline rush and vertigo as if we were going up and down sharp curves of a roller coaster.

The second simulator took us on a tour in a small airplane, through various climates such as snow, rain, and gusts of wind. The sensation of being on the verge of crashing into things had us on the edge of our seat with a pit in our stomach. We would have loved to experience a third film.

Located on Boulevard Benito Juarez in front of the Mercado de Artesanías (the Curios Market), just a few steps away from the green taxi cabs heading toward Tijuana. They are open every day a week except Wednesday, from 1pm to 9pm.
